Welcome to the world of teenagers! We have the same problem and were told from others who've been through it that it'll be like this for about 5 years.

There is no denying that the teenage years are challenging! It's a great sign that your son is initiating communication. I suspect that he just wants you to listen and not to offer suggestions. Children and in particular teenagers need to work through their own issues and will often just use you as a safe person to bounce off their ideas. Just being there as an empathic good listener, respectful of his comments will encourage him to talk more to you but more importantly will help him understand himself. Teaching your child emotional intelligence is powerful and yet often the simpler choice for a parent.
