Kids with ADHD often cannot stand the slow-motion, tedium of a classroom. The ADHD brain craves stimulation. That's why it takes so well to anything that's on a screen - computers, gameboys, T.V. and so on. There's lots of changes second-by-second on a screen and that's just what the ADHD brain loves. All kids get bored by school, but for the youngster with ADHD this boredom is intolerable, actually painful. Some people have been able to work the child's teacher to create "false" stimulation within the long school day. This can consist of things like giving this child errands to run down the school hall throughout the day or giving the child rewards for finishing assigned written work - activities that are ADHD friendly like artwork or computer work. Of course, this depends on the flexibility of the classroom. Sometimes the child can leave the classroom and sit in the office with his own gameboy, refreshing his strained mind after finishing lengthy seat work. Sometimes the teacher can incorporate more physical activity into the day for the entire class. It's not the child's fault that his brain works this way. And you're right - twenty years of schooling for this kind of child is a form of slow torture! For now, I suggest sitting down with each teacher and exploring what can be done. Sarah Chana
