BURPING BABIES

Why Do Babies Burp?

Burping helps get rid of some of the air that babies swallow. If babies aren’t burped frequently, too much swallowed air can make these little people feel out of sorts and cranky.  Insufficient burping can also cause digestive upset leading to an increase in spitting up. Burping your baby is necessary whether you breastfeed or formula feed your child.

Do All Babies Need to be Burped?

Most babies will need to be burped, but don’t worry if your baby doesn’t. Some babies don’t take in so much air, and therefore won’t need to be burped as often, or even at all.

How Can You Help Your  Baby Burp?

For burping your baby, gentle patting on your infant’s back should work - you shouldn’t have to hit hard on your little one’s back. In order to prevent large messes when your baby spits up or has a \"wet burp,\" try placing a bib or a towel under your baby\'s chin or upon your shoulder.

When Should You Stop Burping Your Baby?

The time that parents can stop burping varies with each baby. Generally when babies reach 6-7 months of age most will stop spitting up so often. If you notice your baby burping on his or her own before this age, you can safely stop assisting burping. It is possible for babies to stop burping as early as 3-4 months. Babies do not usually burp as often once they start eating solid foods.
