I was about 13 when I learned to swallow pills.  My father taught me by giving me little pieces of rolled up bread to swallow, which was less scary than an actual pill.  He had me gulp down the water, as opposed to drinking it normally.  After a few tries I got the hang of it.  I still don't love swallowing pills but I can do it without any difficulty.
