| I think parents sometimes do feel inadequate if they can't get their babies and young children to sleep through the night. I don't know if they're lying; maybe they are just exaggerating about how well things are going for fear of looking bad. If we could all just acknowledge that little people wake up a lot, we'd all be more relaxed and realize it's just a normal thing - nothing to be ashamed of! Neither you nor anyone else is a failure because a one year old wakes up to nurse. It's the most natural thing in the world. If someone is lucky enough to enjoy uninterrupted sleep with young children, they are the exception. Those tired moms and dads whose sleep is regularly disturbed are in the majority. As the kids get older, however, more and more sleep comes to them and their parents. Of course, parents of teenagers lose sleep again, for different reasons! Sarah Chana
