| Many people like to try other interventions before using medication. Some find that they get good enough results uses alternative approaches while others will eventually move on to try medication. If you would like to start without meds, there are several approaches you can take. Behavior therapy for ADHD has a good track record. Try to find an ADD/ADHD specialist who can design a behavior modification program for you to use at home and for the teachers to implement at school. Visit your local health food store and ask for children's "ADD" nutrients. Several companies market essential fatty acid blends especially to help children calm down and focus better. There are other nutrients and supplements that may be useful as well - consult a naturopath familiar with ADD/ADHD to design an individualized program of supplements for your son. There are also many books on the market that help parents learn about alternative treatments for ADD/ADHD. Various disciplines have their own approaches to this disorder, including homeopathic medicine, Bach Flower Therapy, Brain Gym and others. So start exploring your options. Look carefully for signs of change and improvement. If you really don't see any after a good try at alternative approaches, then you might revisit the idea of psychotropic medication, carefully weighing the advantages and disadvantages at that time.
