| You need to show your daughter that you have confidence in her ability to fall asleep. Just to be nice, you or your wife can offer to sit in her room with her - or even lie in her bed if you want to - for a maximum of 5 minutes. Tell her that she should make sure to fall asleep within those first few minutes if she wants you with her for the falling asleep part, because no matter what, you are leaving after 5 minutes. Then make sure you do that! At first there will be lots of fussing on her part, maybe even hysteria. However, if you absolutely keep to your word and never back down, she'll see that you mean business and she'll just start to go to sleep like other kids do. If she senses your fear or ambivalence, however, she will put up a long hard fight. She must see your absolute commitment to this plan - this is what will allow her to give up the struggle and learn to go to bed. Sarah Chana
