| Some nervousness and even anxiety is normal when one is being tested and also when one is overwhelmed with responsibilities. However extreme behaviors may indicate a mental health issue. Staying up late one night to cram for an exam is normal; going without sleep regularly is not and may lead to a worsening of one's mental health due to sleep deprivation. Crying once in awhile because of overwhelm is "emotional" but acceptable; crying almost every day is not. You might speak to your doctor about your daughter's behavior giving him more details about how often each of these behaviors occurs. If he thinks there may be a problem, he'll refer you to a mental health professional for further assessment and, if necessary, treatment. Meanwhile, you can let your daughter know that you are feeling concerned and that you are going to take some steps to help her through what is obviously a very tough school year. She'll appreciate your support (even if she protests that she's "fine"). At least she'll know that you are seeing what's going on and you care enough to take action. Sarah Chana
