| The answer to this question depends so much on "where you're coming
from." In some circles, 13 year old kids date freely without parental
supervision. In other circles, kids never date until it's time to get
married, at which point their parents arrange a selection of
pre-screened applicants and the dating period lasts a month or two
until the knot is tied. And, of course, there is everything in between.
Perhaps you and your husband have different ideas of when dating should
start. However, I would agree that the arrangement you describe is an
actual "date." When kids start to date, they may also start to
experiment sexually. Unless you chaperone your daughter you can expect
her to behave like a normal young person and that means some sexual
experimentation in most cases. Do you want to provide her with
education around this subject right now? Are you comfortable with her
moving into that stage? If you feel she's too young for all this, then
don't give her permission to go anywhere alone with a boy just yet. It
sounds like the young man in question is a fine fellow but that doesn't
mean he is not a normal young man. Boys and girls want to be with each
other for more than platonic friendship. So acknowledge all of this and
then decide how you want to proceed. If you are O.K. with your daughter
growing up now but your husband isn't, perhaps you can work out a
compromise of some kind. Does Dad want to see the movie too? Perhaps
you wait until she actually turns 15 in June - would Dad be happier
with that? Obviously both of your feelings must be taken into account.
Remember, too, that your daughter is growing up and, depending on "where
you're coming from" will be growing up soon, sooner or right away. Give
her all the information she needs for a safe journey!
