| In fact, it is possible for a baby to be depressed. Sometimes a baby has the genes for depression. Sometimes the experiences of a baby can lead to a depression as well - for instance, if the baby is not receiving sufficient stimulation and attention (although a fair amount of neglect needs to occur before a depression will result). Depression in babies is detected by a flatness of affect (not a lot of emotion) and often, irritability (which you say your baby doesn't have). The flatness of affect by itself does not necessarily indicate depression. You should talk to your pediatrician about your concerns and bring the baby in for an assessment. The doctor may refer you to an infant specialist. If depression is actually diagnosed, there are parent-based interventions that have been shown to be very helpful. So do look into it and try to help your baby as much as possible. Meanwhile, there is no harm in also giving her some Bach Flowers. You can ask for an assessment by a Bach Flower practitioner or look for more information about this on www.bachflower.com. This intervention is harmless and it might perk up her mood and responsiveness. If your doctor feels that everything is O.K. it is still fine to use the flowers or perhaps homeopathic remedies to help her along. Sarah Chana
